Omega Speedmaster 125: The first automatic winding chronometer chronograph
- Tags: automatic winding, chronograph, chronometer
In 1973, people over at Omega have decided to celebrate their 125th anniversary with something HUGE. The first automatic winding chronograph with a chronometer certificate. And not only that, the watch itself was HUGE. Even for today’s standards, this watch is a solid piece of stainless steel. However, compared to large watches mean today (mostly because of the mode), this watch has some interesting piece of construction within as well. The movement within the watch, the Omega caliber 1041 (based on the Lemania caliber 1341) is still honored today by many enthusiasts of Omega and chronograph. The Omega Speedmaster 125 (ST378.0801) is rare, with only 2000 pieces were made. Years ago, the mandrel Maddox has written an excellent and very extensive article on the Speedmaster 125. I do not think the prices mentioned in this article are now days, especially not puisqu’Antiquorum made their trip auction of Omegamania. You can read his article here.
Today I stumbled across some great images of this large (51mm x 42mm) piece of stainless steel. Apparently, the owner (using a nickname that suggests it is a Paneristi) knows really photograph a show, see the image below. You can see all the photographs in this thread in the forum over at Omega timezone by PaneraiXS.
Honestly, I think the Omega Speedmaster watches of this period really a breath of true craftmanship certain `they [manufacturers shows] today can only imitate with – mostly – the so-called` exorbitant toolwatches ‘. that’s why I like being immobile for Omega Speedmaster to the `Moonwatch professional stainless steel with a hesalite (read: crystal plastic) for a very decent price. Unfortunately, they also create a whole group of other watches that I see rather not do.
If you want to take a step out of the ordinary, let the actual current catalog, and click Chrono24 (for example), to find your own Speedmaster 125. Although more expensive than a few years of support, they always go for less than the price of a wristwatch basic Panerai for example. A quick search tells me that large Chrono24 is on sale for just under 2000 euros. For starters of course, will pay more if you want one with the box and papers. WatchMunich.com for example, has sold in great state, for the Euro 2050.
